🕕The Twelfth Hour🕕

Sometimes you look around and have a funny feeling

A dread you cannot shake

Fifties coming in January

And death relegated to the second page

Some days you’re lit with fury

Other days you can’t care at all

Good news is a miscellaneous frill

Distracting you in the eleventh hour.

But you do not see the clock

There is no clock to see

While demagogues debate the humanity of the lost

You return your grocery cart at Walmart

And dream of bird feeders on your porch

Bacteria chew at the ocean’s garbage patch

As billionaires fruitlessly plan their runaway.

Through your detachment and fear of the future, you know, all you need is to catch your breath

No cataclysm will wipe the Earth clean

No myth will come to pass

The world will change of course,

But it simply will not end.

Well and good you say,

Though change does tend to hurt

While fusion reactors sputter to life,

People burn their clothes for warmth.

You say, I know the world won’t end

But will I see it rise?

I do not have the energy to fix it,

Nor do I have the mind.

From here I’ll take your hand and say,

I know exactly how you feel,

I want every person to live to see it

But all I have is the will.

So let us return our grocery carts

And feed the dinosaurs on our porch

Catch your breath, if you can,

And we’ll watch the twelfth hour come to pass.

“Space exploration is a waste of money” is one of those sentences that instantly tells you someone has never studied modern history. I mean sure the space race invented the solar panel, the insulin pump, GPS, modern firefighting equipment, the CAT scan, hearing aids, baby formula, upgraded home insulation, artificial limbs, the freeze-drying process, modern water filters, and the foundations of all computer technology today, but besides that what a waste!

even disregarding that, space is really cool and people who only want research to be on the most imminently economically “practical” things are the most boring fucks who want to drag the rest of us in into a dull quagmire of ignorance.

human beings exist to travel and explore.
